Abbott Family History
This ancient surname is generally of early English origins, predating the Anglo-Saxons and Normans. It was usually an occupational name for a person employed by an abbot, or perhaps a nickname for one who was thought to conduct himself like an abbot! It is also possible that in some cases the name may refer to the offspring of an Abbot, however as the clergy were supposed to be celibrate there is an area of doubt. The surname also occurs widely in Scotland where it is either of English origin or a translation of MacNab, which also means 'son of the abbot'...Select Audience

Hi everyone, well, first, what do I know? My great, great grandfather James Abbott was born in approx 1851 in Trim, Ireland. He married Anna Maria Clendenning (or Clendinning) in September 1883 in Kells, Ireland. Anna went by the name Annie Abbott. They gave birth to four sons; Thomas Joseph (1885), William George (1889), Edward James (1891) and James (approx 1895) and four daughters; Annie (approx 1884), Isabella Victoria (1887), Ellen Rebecca (1901) and Emily Elizabeth (approx 1905).
Thomas emigrated to Canada in 1904. Isabella in 1908, Edward in 1910 ,William in 1911, James in 1914, James, his wife Annie and daughters Ellen and Emily in 1920. James passed away the following year in 1921 in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Daughter Annie remained in Ireland and lived in Dublin on Harold Road in 1920.
We have been told by family that at some point after James' death, Annie returned to Ireland, though I have not found this in any records. We also know from Thomas' obituary that at the time of his death in 1954, his sister Emily was now Emily Wright and residing in England, Annie (of 1884) was now Annie Fidler, residing in Dublin, Ireland, Isabella was now Isabella Harris residing in Kenora, ON, Canada and Ellen was now Ellen Rowe, residing in Chicago, USA.
I am looking for any further information regarding either Annie or James Abbott's family.
