TAGGART Family History

Recorded in many forms as shown below, this is a Gaelic surname. It is widespread throughout Scotland and in Ireland mainly Ulster. However spelt it is a form of the Old Gaelic "Mac an tsagairt", meaning the son of the priest! The marriage of clerics in minor orders was always permissible in the Catholic Church, but the marriage of priests had been declared illegal and invalid in the 12th Century. However the practice continued throughout the medieval period, though in some instances, the name may have been used to denote someone suspected of being the son of a priest. Early recordings include Donald McKyntagart of Dumfries, in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland in 1459, and who had remission of his fine; William Maktygar "oratour and beidman" of "the Kingis hospitaile of the trinite college besyd" was recorded in Edinburgh in 1504, and Thomas McKyntaggart was a tenant in Strathdee in 1527...

My 2ggf was William Henry Taggart, born in Derry, Ireland in 1832.  He emigrated to the United States arriving aboard the Ann Harley 26 Jan 1849.  I am intersted in discovering his ancestry back to where I assume the family originated in Scotland.

I am the Great, Great, Great granddaughter of John Taggart who was born in County Tyrone and the The Great Great Granddaughter of his son Robert Taggart who was born in Belfast. These Taggarts immigrated to America and raised families there. My Grand mother is Elizabeth G Taggart Mason, Daughter of Clark Taggart who was a son of Robert Taggart. I am interested in finding Taggart family in Ireland. How is the best way for me to go about this?

I am researching my Grandmothers family from Tamybuck, Antrim. Her name was Isabella (Bella) Taggart born 1896. Her father Robert Hill Taggart and mother Mary Ann. Her siblings: Rosetta, Annie, Lizzie, Hill, Esther, Jane(Jeannie), William, Martha, Andrew & Robert. If anyone is related I would be interested to getting in touch.

Hi Wayne. I believe we might be related, as I can trace my ancestry back to William Taggart also of Antrim, Ulster, Ireland, whose father was Thomas Taggart, listed as about 1610, Ireland. I trace my ancestry through George Washington Taggart of New Hampshire, with his family emigrating from Ireland to Canada, then New Hampshire, and also directly to the U.S.

My name is Tom Klindt, the grandson of Blanche Whitney (ne: Taggart) Klindt of Cowley, Wyoming, a direct descendent of George Washington Taggart (1816-1893) born in Sharon, New Hampshire, U.S. and traceable through records to William Taggart of Antrim, Ulster, Ireland, 1630-1701). His father was Thomas Taggart, about 1610, Ireland. From there I run out of records. I'm interested in finding out all I can about my Taggart ancestry, and what, if any, the connection is to Ferchar mac in tSagairt the first Scottish O' Beollain.

I have a question for anyone on this network. I am an American and am interested in my family history. The farthest we can trace our Taggart ancestor is Henry Taggart born in 1806 in Ireland. We do think he is Ulter. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to find more information?

P.S. - just have another newspaper mention of connection to Co. Antrim. This connection is between James Taggart (my g-g-grandfather/wife to Mary Stewart) and Jane Elder the mother-in-law of the afore mentioned Patrick Taggart. ".......The deaths of Mrs. Jane ELDER, age 87 and James TAGGART, sr., age 90, who were among the first settlers of Cascade Valley, Cumberland Co., N.S., are reported. It is a singular coincidence that the deceased were neighbors while living in Ireland, came to this country about the same time, have always lived as neighbors in this country and died within three days of each other....." Just some additional info.

5th generation Canadian 'Taggart' from Nova Scotia. Scot-Irish racial origin from Ulster - Antrim but possibly Derry or Down. My g-g-grandfather was a James Taggart with wife Mary Stewart/Stuart immigrated to the province of Nova Scotia in the mid 1840"s. Settled in Cumberland County area of N.S.. Arrived with children; William, Daniel, James, and Nancy followed by birth of Robert and Thomas.@ other "Taggart" families had previously settled in the same area of Cumberland County. They would be John and Sarah(McAloney) Taggart and Patrick and Jennie (Elder) Taggart . These 3 families are said to be related as brothers or cousins. All are connected to Co Antrim, Ulster and there is proof from turn of the century newspapers of a connection between Patrick and Co. Antrim in a notice of the 50 anniversery of his daughter Elizabeths wedding to Francis McAleese of Ballymoney which stated ".....โ€œMcAleese-Taggart: At Maccan, N.S. June 22, 1861 at 3:15 p.m. by Rev.?A.F. Thompson, of Amherst, Francis McAleese, of Ballymena, to Eliza,?daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Patrick Taggart, of Dunminnon. Both the contracting parties were born in County Antrim, Ireland. These two good?people, now residents of Parrsboro, celebrated their 50th anniversary of their marriage on Coronation Day last week. They have eleven sons and daughters living, and 29 grandchildren.โ€ (It is possible that place should be Dunminning and not Dunminnion as used in the Canadian family. From this northern part of the province of Nova Scotia these Taggarts spread the family across the Canadian western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; as well as into the New England States of the U.S.- Maine and Massachuetts and from there to other states such as Wisconsin and New York. I have been tracing and verifying this ancestry from about the 1860's but do not have a verified connection with Ulster. Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated and if I can help with any of these other connections that I have mentioned please do not hesitate to get in contact with me. - Regards; Wayne.
