MCCRYSTAL Family History
This is the Irish and specifically Ulster form of the Scottish surname Chrystal, Crystal, Christal, and McChrystal. Curiously in Scotland it does not ever seem to have been recorded with the Mac prefix It is a diminutive spelling of the first name 'Christopher', introduced into Britain by Crusader knights returning from their various expeditions to free the Holy Land in the 12th century. The modern translation is 'Christ bearing', which logic suggests was not its original meaning. The name is first recorded in Scotland in 1447 when William Christole was recorded as being a 'burgess of Prestwick', whilst in 1474 Charles Christoll was recorded as being presented in court in order to ascertain whether he was the 'narrest and apperand arr to Cristole Jonsoun'.Select Audience
