KEYES Family History
This interesting name has an unusual number of verifiable origins, any one of which could be the source of the modern surname. It is an occupational name for a maker of keys or for someone holding the ceremonial office of key-bearer, derived from the Old English pre 7th Century "caeg", key. It can also be a topographical name for one living or working on a wharf, from the Middle English "kay(e)", quay. The Celtic personal name "Cai" or "Key", thought to be from the Roman name "Gaius" or "Caius" is another source, and two nicknames, one from the northern dialect (Middle English) "kay", meaning "jackdaw" and one from the Danish dialect word "kei", left, for a left-handed man, are further possible sources...Select Audience

David Keyes
My name is David Glen Keyes. I live in Illinois, USA. I am descendented from Thomas Keyes, born 1749, married Mary Belsham in 1778, and died 1808 in Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Ess.ex, England. I am related to Sidney Kilworth Keyes, the author and poet. Albert Belcham Keyes, born 16 August 1862, Moons Farm, Ashindgon, Ess.ex (is my great-grand father) immigrated to Illinois in 1883. That is how this branch of the Keyes came to USA and Illinois.

1) Fernando Key Muรฑoz : Born in Icod de los Vinos (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), 1768 / died in Caracas Venezuela in 1845. Fernando was the first Minister of Finance of Venezuela after it declared its independence from the Spanish crown in 1810 (https://dbe.rah.es/biografias/69575/fernando-key-munoz). Fernando was a son of Diego Key Artachin, born in Kilkenny circa 1719
2) Santiago Key Muรฑoz (brother of Fernando Key Muรฑoz) : Born in Icod de los Vinos (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) 1772 / died in 1821. Santiago was a member of the Spanish parliament in Cadiz in 1810 during the Napoleonic occupation of Spain. (https://www.congreso.es/cem/h1810-10)
3) Santiago Key Ayala (direct descendant of Fernando Key Muรฑoz): Born in Caracas in1874 / died in Caracas in 1959) He was a historian, writer and diplomat, and is considered one of the most important Venezuelan intellectuals from the first half of the 20th century. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_Key_Ayala#cite_note-1)
4) It's worth noting that probably Diego Key Artachin or one of his relations in the Canary Islands is somehow related to Fernando de Castilla y Mendoza, who was a great grand son of queen Leonor de Aragon y Albuquerque, who, in turn, was an aunt of king Fernando II de Aragon (Fernando El Catรณlico) (https://castilla.maxerco.es/getperson.php?personID=I98879&tree=fernandodecastilla)
I hope you find this information useful, interesting and verifiable.
Kind regards
Rodolfo Key
PS: What is the best way to find the ancestors of Diego Key Artachin in Ireland? Thank you
