CONLEY Family History
Recorded in the spellings of Connelly, Connolly and Conley, this is an anglicized form of the Old Gaelic pre 10th century "O'Conghaile". The Gaelic prefix "O" indicates "male descendant of", plus the personal byname "Conghaile", from "con", a hound and "gal", valour; hence "descendants of the Hound of Valour". The O'Conghailes were an ancient Connacht sept, who with the passage of time, separated and dispersed into three main branches. The chief branch resided in County Meath and was one of the "Four Tribes of Tara".Select Audience

My Great Grandfather 6x John Bryan OโConnelly (1/1/1723-1795) came to PA from Galway, Ireland in 1743. He died in Burke, NC. His father was Michael John OโConnelly (1700-1733). His wife was Mary (Foley) Conley. They had six children and their birth record last names were โConnelly.โ John Connelly (1757-1807) was one of their sons. His wife was Nancy Susannah (Ballew) Conley (1756-1851).
Their son James L. later had his last name changed to โConley.โ He was married to Mary Elizabeth Sherrill. One of their children was John Wesley Conley (1813-1885).
Robert Taylor Conley (1844-1892) was his son and my great grandfather 3x. He and several other Conleys fought for the confederacy during the civil war. He and a few others were in the โConley Sharpshootersโ unit.
My great grandfather was Ernest S. Conley (1888-1956) and my grandfather was Edward L โBairโ Conley (1914-1973).
Galway is a city in the province of Connacht in West Ireland. There were fourteen families who controlled the commercial, political and social life of the city from the mid 13th century through the late 19th century. One of those families were Oโ Martin.

Hi I am Jamie CONLEY Caperton and I am trying to track down the lineage of my second great grandfather George Alfred Conley. We are told in family documents that he came from Burke Co. North Carolina and had relatives in Georgia but we are having a terrible time documenting him and his wife Arminta back any further than the birth of their children in Missouri and living in Arkansas. We would love to be able to clarify the lineage if possible

Hi,
Trying to trace my Conley roots. My DNA says I am from North Connacht. Any ideas anyone?
Thank you
