BOLTON Family History
This surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a locational name from any of the places so called, for example those in Cumbria, Lancashire, Northumberland, Westmorland, and in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Recorded variously as "Bodeltun", and "Bodeltone" in the Domesday Book of 1086 for the above counties, the name, in all cases, derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century "bothl", "botl", dwelling house, hall, with the Olde English "tun", enclosure, settlement. Locational names were originally given to the Lord of the Manor, or as a means of identification to those who left their place of origin to seek work or settle elsewhere...Select Audience

Richard Bolton, according to a marriage record was born in 1799 in Ontario, was married in Ontario, Canada to Mary Ann James at the age of 62 in 1861. His parents are listed as Richard Bolton and Mary Lindon, born in Wexford, Ireland. What do we know of the Bolton family of Wexford from before the Canadian immigration?

My grandmother was abandoned at an orphan asylum in San Francisco, California in 1903. She said she paper pinned to her gown that said her name was "Louise Bolton." Have had very little success in finding connections through DNA Ancestry.com, 23andM3, or FamilyTreeDNA. The MtDNA however suggests her maternal family originated from Inishowen. I wonder if possibly the lack of DNA matches has to do with the possibility that her mother was the only one to emigrate, and that other family members remained in Ireland. Far-fetched I know, but I find it hard to accept that there are no living DNA connections.
